What Should We Be Thinking for the 2nd Half of the Year?

By
As hard as it is to believe, we are almost half-way through the year.  As a result, we should be thinking NOW about what to stop, start and continue for the second half of the year.  I learned this exercise from my HR mentor (a P&G-trained guru) as we performed it with our team with great results (thanks Debra!). Stop, Start, Continue Here are the questions to ask yourself and your team:  Stop – What should we stop doing?  This is actually the hardest. Not only do I find it hard to stop doing things I’ve included in my daily…

Warehousing Strategies for Success

By
The Amazon Effect is creating elevated levels of stress in the warehousing and distribution world. The key question is how to provide immediate deliveries, customized service, easy returns, and more for a reduced cost – a very good question indeed! A few considerations to ponder:  Storage capacity -What is your storage capacity?  How does that compare with your requirements?  And how can you maximize what you can store in your warehouse? Flow – Are you running in circles around your warehouse to support your customers?  Similar to a manufacturing environment, flow can be an essential ingredient to warehousing success –…

Should I Move?

By
Our clients frequently call with questions such as:  Should we renew our lease?  Should we move to a lower cost area?  Should we move to a lower cost state?  What considerations should we think about when evaluating our manufacturing and logistics network?  Should we outsource? Thus, we thought it would be prudent to address some questions and themes that should be evaluated from a strategic point-of-view when discussing supply chain network assessments. Let’s start by saying that our top clients begin THINKING about these topics several years in advance. Similar to selling a business, it isn’t the best plan to…

Buried in Data. Dig Your Way Out & Leverage for Success

By
90% of the world’s data has been created in the last two years. Mind boggling!  Of course, we are getting buried in data and aren’t sure how to dig our way out and leverage for success. If you just think about your first few hours after waking up in the morning, you’ve received millions of messages and data:  1) News reports from the radio. 2) Text messages and emails on your phone. 3) Most likely you’ve driven by billboard messages on your way to work.  4) The TV might have been on in the background while getting ready for work.…

The Amazon Effect Remains Hot

By
Our marketing guru asked whether we should start talking about other topics aside from the Amazon Effect since there are a vast number of key topics occurring in manufacturing and distribution, and she wondered if it was becoming stale (and it’s her job to make us look at timely as possible). The answer came in from all angles – conference leaders continue to request this topic, news reporters continue to ask about it (including the Wall Street Journal in a recent conversation) and everyone is STILL talking about it. For example, when the Ontario Chamber CEO mentioned this topic for…

Amazon Fears Driving Supplier Price Concessions at Costco

By
Amazon continues to wreak havoc on supply chains worldwide.  A client that does not compete directly with Amazon forwarded an article on Costco’s new price pressures on suppliers in response to Amazon concerns.  She said that these types of industry moves were creating disruption and price pressure in her industry, even though unrelated to consumer products.  Thus, we better pay attention!   According to an analyst at Stifel Nicolaus, Costco’s remarks were the first time a retailer in their coverage has explicitly admitted exacting price concessions from suppliers. That is a BIG deal!  Costco’s CFO has said the brands need…

Technologies of Disruption & E-Commerce

By
I participated on the Amazon Effect: Play or Pass Panel at the Manufacturers’ Council of the Inland Empire’s Manufacturing Summit.  B.J. Patterson, Dan Vest and I had an interesting discussion about the technologies of disruption.  Certainly Amazon has led the way with several of these…. For example, e-commerce directly correlates to Amazon.  Who doesn’t want to order 1 toothbrush or 1 can of carpet cleaner at a time and expects it to arrive within 24-48 hours?  It appears as though we all do! Yet we don’t think about what it takes behind the scenes to make this happen. For example, the…

The Latest Trends

By
I recently spoke on the topic of the latest trends and what is in store for 2018. The Amazon Effect is still top of mind as well as near-sourcing, finding a “right fit” team member and technology. You need to be thinking of how these trends are likely to impact your business.
