Hurricane Harvey & Supply Chain Impacts

By
Hurricane Harvey has been wreaking havoc on Texas and is now threatening parts of Louisiana. Flooding is tremendous and many people are still trapped in their houses. Refineries are shut down and basic necessities are being rationed. Unfortunately, this is the devastation caused by a hurricane and it reminds us about natural disasters and the global impact. The earthquake in Japan had an impact for several months. In Houston’s case, businesses in the city and surrounding areas are shut down or, at a minimum, affected without access to local suppliers, logistics networks etc. Gas prices are higher with the closure…

A Tour of Skechers and Jaw Dropping Savings (and Innovations)

By
A Tour of Skechers & Jaw Dropping Savings Recently, I went on a tour of Skechers with my ProVisors group.  We had heard so much about the building and related innovations from the developer, Iddo Benzeevi, previously that we were really excited to see it in action.  There are truly jaw dropping savings – $25 million a year reduction in operating costs – from the total picture.  Who can argue with that?  Certainly not the environmentally-conscious people as it is also the largest LEED Gold Certified building of its kind to be awarded with this distinction by the U.S. Green…

Risk in Global Supply Chain Is on the Rise

By
According to the Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply (CIPS) risk index, risk is the highest since 2013. It is easy to become complacent. Are you adding risk into your supply chain conversations and plans? The increase is driven by supply chain risk in Western and Central Europe, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Latin America and Sub-Saharan Africa. Specifically: Western Europe – This trend is clearest in Western Europe, where risk rose to 2.63 in Q3 from 2.60 in the previous quarter. The uncertainty around the post-Brexit relationship between the UK and the European Union has had a negative impact on trade…

Navigating the Global Supply Chain Starts with People

By
At APICS Inland Empire’s recent executive panel and networking symposium on “Navigating the Global Supply Chain”, we had some intriguing discussions on the hot topics in global supply chains. Wouldn’t you know, even with a complex, technical topic like this one, people are #1! Start with your employees. As I said while leading a webinar on “Onshoring Profits” earlier today, I’ve never seen “happy customers” with “unhappy employees”. Have you? Thus, clearly starting there is cornerstone in navigating the supply chain. However, this step is not enough. We must expand to collaborating with your supply chain partners. Your supply chain…

Navigating the Global Supply Chain

By
Last week, I participated in the development of the Supply Chain Roadmap 2025. It will result in a compilation of what more than 100 industry thought leaders had to say about the future of material handling and logistics. It is quite an interesting process to take a step back from the daily grind and sometimes fire-fighting to think strategically and long-term. I look forward to the report coming out in the spring of 2017! Similarly, I have been focused on finalizing the executive panel for APICS Inland Empire’s upcoming symposium on navigating the global supply chain — we have an amazing lineup of…

The Power of Students

By
Last week, while attending APICS 2016 in Washington DC, I was able to spend time with the West Coast student case competition‘s winning team, San Diego State University. I am the Chair of the West Coast student case competition, and I was proud to see our team represent us at APICS 2016’s global competition. In today’s Amazon-impacted world, supply chain management is ever more relevant. And, it was especially exciting that our team made it into the top 5 teams globally — congrats! (See them pictured below after the competition.) Effectively managing the global supply chain is not only a…
