Manufacturers Upbeat but Worry About Skills Gap

By
According to Industry Week, the Fed’s survey of the economy expressed optimism; however, it also noted that labor markets are tightening. Since I’m also embarking on refreshing my 2013 Skills Gap research report, thus far, I’ve noted the same concerns for high-skilled positions. I hear far less conversation about lower-skilled positions when it comes to availability (instead I hear about minimum wage concerns); however, the vast majority of my clients require higher-skilled positions. In these cases, it is not always easy — or even attainable — to find the resources needed on a timely basis. What are you doing to get…

Tour of Combustion Associates & Collaboration

By
Earlier this week, I participated in a manufacturers’ roundtable and tour at Combustion Associates as an APICS Inland Empire chapter event. It was an enlightening conversation and tour since the products and services are quite unique and the power of collaboration shined through at every point in the process. See a few of APICS-IE Board member colleagues pictured below. (Tony, we missed you for the photo!) Not only did Kusum Kavia (EVP of Combustion Associates) make sure it was an interesting event, she invited a wide variety of colleagues from international resources to government officials to local manufacturers to participate with our APICS-IE members.…

Trump’s Major Increase in Defense Spending and Related Impacts

By
Trump has proposed a rather dramatic increase in defense spending. His proposed $20 billion boost in military spending isn’t pocket change and will have a dramatic ripple effect on manufacturers across-the-board. It doesn’t matter what gets approved in the end — the direction is clear. How will defense spending impact your business? Waiting for final approval before considering how to leverage this opportunity seems foolhardy! FYI I love the picture below as it reminds me of one of my all-time favorite shows, JAG. What Should We Consider and/or What Impacts Could Arise? When military spending increases, defense-related manufacturing booms. It…

70% of Manufacturing Execs Say Near-Sourcing Will Increase

By
Lisa Anderson MBA, CSCP, president of LMA Consulting Group, conducted a proprietary research study to better understand outsourcing, near-sourcing and insourcing trends for U. S.-based manufacturers. Pending further analysis, Anderson reports on a preliminary finding that shows that 70% of responding executives expect near-sourcing to increase within the next five years. Survey data was collected from August to October 2016, and the U. S. presidential election may have an impact on this trend toward near-sourcing. “I’ve seen that manufacturers were already considering insourcing to the U.S. and near-sourcing options to Mexico and other closely located countries because of the Amazon effect – the need…

Thinking Long Term

By
We all know we should think long term. And we talk about thinking long term. But, do we actually think long term — and live with our decisions even when it’s hard? Not nearly as often as we should! Since we work with already successful manufacturers and distributors that want to build upon and accelerate success, we have worked with many executives who think long term; however, it remains a rarity. Just think about those executives who make a great long-term decision but waver when the going gets tough. I imagine we all know too many! One client hired expensive…

Will Your Supply Chain Risk Surprise You?

By
Supply chain risks abound! Just look at the recent bankruptcy of Hanjin. It created havoc in the global supply chain. Ships were virtually stranded on the water. No one knew how they’d get paid. Customers still needed the product. And so the results were scary. Have you thought about these types of risks within your supply chain? At our APICS Inland Empire executive panel and networking symposium, we had a panel of experts on navigating the global supply chain. A renowned international business attorney brought up a significant topic — what if a conflict brews in the South China sea?…

Research on Outsourcing Trends in Manufacturing

By
LMA Consulting Group’s Lisa Anderson Conducts Research on Outsourcing Trends in Manufacturing Lisa Anderson MBA, CSCP, president of LMA Consulting Group, is launching a third industry research study to help manufacturers, distributors and supply chain executives identify, understand and anticipate the trends in outsourcing, nearsouring and insourcing.  On the heels of the recession and an earlier trend by business to outsource, many businesses have jumped on the outsourcing bandwagon only to reverse course and bring all or some of their production back in-house. Later hybrids of insourcing and nearsourcing have helped companies maximize total value and more effectively meet customer…
